Tapia Conference: Befriending Failure is Simply Smarter

Date:
Wednesday, September 20, 2017 to Saturday, September 23, 2017

The Tapia Conference—the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing—takes place in Atlanta, GA.

Dr. Holmes is a frequent participant at the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing Conference where she has led panels and discussions  on building careers and community. This year she is returning this year to be presenting as part of a panel, Befriending Failure is Simply Smarter.

When Dr. Bushra Anjum, Amazon, asked if Dr. Holmes wanted to join her on a panel about failure at the conference, her improvisational self said, “Yes, definitely.” Given a recent string of challenging engagements and the nature of building a new field and company, Dr Holmes was feeling particularly qualified to be one of four women sharing our personal and professional failures.

In text written on a page, it might seem easy to say “befriend failure.” However, it is an emotional and intellectually challenging process to do. In this panel, four women PhDs from different national and racial backgrounds speak their experiences with failure and how they use or befriend them. Joining Dr. Anjum and Dr. Holmes on this panel are Dr. Maria Patterson, University of Washington, and Dr. Misbah Mubarak, Argonne National Lab.

Befriending Failure is Simply Smarter takes place on Friday, September 22, 2017 — 10:45 am - 12:15 pm.
