Black Protest in Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, and Hip-Hop - Dan Belmont and Allen Cox

Take a musical tour through the 1950s to the present, focusing on black protest songs with Dan Belmont and Allen Cox. The journey will start with Strange Fruit sung by Billie Holiday and then move into the 1960s with Nina Simone. In the 1970s you meet Stevie Wonder. We will end exploring the music of H.E.R., Anderson .Paak, John Legend, and Common. We discuss the history of protest songs and the place of music in our lives.

Allen Cox has been a grassroots community organizer for 30 years. His life has been filled with a love and relationship to music and Black communities in New York and around the country. Dan Belmont is a musician, improvisational composer and teacher who has been working alongside community organizers in support of Black leadership and human development for decades.

Together they lead an intimate and historical exploration of Black protest in their lives, the music and the country/world.
