Uncomfortable Independent Conversations - Dec 13, 2021

Let’s have an uncomfortable, independent conversation - December 13, 2021.

  • Uncomfortable in that I am a Black woman scientist wanting to bring diverse Americans closer together around race, racism, discrimination and exclusion.
  • Independent in that I passionately believe we have to create new ways of doing together and speaking together.
  • Conversation in that myself and my White co-lead, social therapeutic coach Carrie Sackett, help participants in our Uncomfortable Independent Conversations (UIC) to be present with each other as who they are in their differences, give what is going on for them in the moment and build with it.

At the request of colleagues and in order to discover what is needed to drive cultural transformation in American around race and racism, I created the UIC in May, 2020. My hope was that UIC would be a place where people could be vulnerable with their experiences, their pain, their hopes and doubts of changing systemic racism in America. My hope was that they could continue to lead uncomfortable conversations with their colleagues, family members, friends. And we/they are!

Join us in our upcoming series as we create conditions for new kinds of conversations across race.

  • "It is helpful to connect with others and be part of an ensemble of amazing people, to be challenged to empathize more and intellectualize less."
  • "It is possible to read the news and read anti-racist books and feel pain by oneself, but caring is more inherently relational, caring requires cultivating social connections and conversations."
