Sweet & Sour Soul: Growing Up Black & Chinese in Hawaii

Hawaiian-born and growing up with Black and Chinese parents, three siblings—Frank, Lani and Randy—take the opportunity to share some of what freedom and independence mean to them and how it shapes their lives. They look forward to you joining them in this conversation at the inaugural Freedom Festival.

Mana Sakaguchi is a bicultural visual artist born in Japan and grew up between Japan and the USA. Having had formal training in photography, Mana's love for design and architecture has grown with a passion for seeking out delicious foods and for finding ways to create sustainably, both in artwork and in her life everyday. Mana was introduced to social therapeutics in NYC, and since 2014, has worked with Life Performance Coaching in San Francisco and on Zoom discovering the joy and power of a playful approach to living/creating, discovering together, who we are becoming!

Frank Wilson was born in 1944 in Honolulu, Hawai'i. He received his J.D. degree from Columbia University Law School in NYC. His career began in Washington DC with legal positions in the Securities and Exchange Commission and the General Counsel's Office. Later as a criminal trial lawyer, he worked in various US Attorneys’ Offices including in Portland, Oregon; Honolulu, Hawaii; and Spokane, Washington. Currently, Frank is a court-appointed special advocate (CASA) guardian ad litem for the Spokane County Juvenile Court. He also serves on the board of directors for the Community Health Association of Spokane.

Lani Wilson

born and raised in Hawai'i, has lived in the Bay Area since college. Lani’s only performance outlet is singing, even as dance is her first love. A lifelong student, she graduated from Punahou School (Honolulu, HI), Stanford University (B.A. Psychology), the University of California at Berkeley (M.A. Developmental Psychology), and The Wright Institute-Berkeley (Ph.D. Social-Clinical Psychology), Lani practiced as a Child Psychologist and Counselor/Faculty at Chabot College. She is currently completing a Master of Divinity (Interreligious Chaplaincy, United Theological Seminary Twin Cities) and Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) training at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center (San Leandro, CA) to become a Board Certified Chaplain (BCCI, Pediatric Chaplain: psychospiritual care of ethnically diverse children/families). Lani has two sons, a daughter-in-law and an adorable grandson.

Randy Wilson (they/them)

was born and raised in Hawai'i through high school. San Francisco has been their home for 30 years. They graduated from SUNY Empire State College, NYC, in developmental psychology. There they met Lois Holzman, director and co-founder of the East Side Institute, and subsequently began training in social therapeutics. Randy has been a life coach with Life Performance Coaching for over 25 years leading in creating environments where clients can develop emotionally and socially, and become more creative choice makers and builders of their lives that have more joy along with challenges.
